I trust you have sensed your heart, mind and soul being stirred and directed to God more often over the last 24 hours or so.
You will find some specific prayer requests at the end of this blog. If you did not get to watch my 6 minute video message Monday to begin our time of prayer and fasting, you can still catch that below
Taking time to fast and pray is one way to remind ourselves of our daily need for God. We may know that we need Him for eternal life, but we can miss Him in the day to day grind… particularly if we are managing to get by and doing not to bad. Taking time to fast reminds us of our fraility and our tendency to lean on the things that temporarily soothe us rather than to run to the God who eternally satisifies.
We are using an acrostic for P.R.A.Y. as some direction for these days.
P – Pause – purposefully planing and setting aside time from our routines to listen, talk and be with God. Invite Him to be with you and lead your time with Him.
R – Reflect – In reflection, the Holy Spirit can direct our thoughts to a more accurate picture of what is going on in our lives and a greater understanding of where God is moving.
A – Ask
Y – Yearn
Today we will think about the ask in prayer.
We are often reminded that prayer is much more than simply asking God for some thing or some help. However, today we are reminded that it is a part of prayer and we are actually invited to ask.
I believe we can miss the opportunity to directly ask God in prayer for our needs and desires because we get busy thinking, hoping and wishing about them. We are invited to be intentional and have a direct conversation with God about them.
Scripture gives some very clear direction on asking God.
a) We are invited to ask?
“But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!” John 15:7
Jesus invites us to abide and be with Him as well as to be able to ask Him for what we need and even want. As we see in the next scripture… Our wants are met when they align with God’s wants….
b) We are to ask with right and godly motives?
“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”James 4:1-3
It is important to have a humble heart in our times of asking. We must be convinced that what God wants for us, is what is best and so we ask him to mold our desires to be in line with His desires so we can ask in faith! We can confess and repent of the desires that are sinful and not God’s way. We can ask Him to heal and transform our heart to line up with His.
and lastly, An IMPORTANT REMINDER…
c) We are to ask for protection from evil.
“O Lord, rescue me from evil people.
Protect me from those who are violent,
2 those who plot evil in their hearts
and stir up trouble all day long.
6 I said to the Lord, “You are my God!”
Listen, O Lord, to my cries for mercy!
7 O Sovereign Lord, the strong one who rescued me,
you protected me on the day of battle.
8 Lord, do not let evil people have their way.
Do not let their evil schemes succeed,
or they will become proud. Psalm 140:1,2,6-8
We are to pray for protection and rescue in a broken world where evil exists. King David writes in this Psalm and models for us how we can pray.
Would you take time today to ask? Ask God to show you how your motives and desires are aligning to His. Ask for His forgiveness where they are wrong.
Would you take time today to list out the things you need to ask God for. Take time to ask Him intentionally and tell Him why. He is listening.
I pray you will find fresh confidence to pray faith-filled prayers, knowing that you aren’t bothering God but rather responding to His invitation when you ask!
May God hear our prayers today,
Dallas and Leah
